ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER
Location: CHESTNUT HILL RESERVOIR Boston, MA
The site strategy used for this Urban Environmental Education Center & Visitor Center is based around noise, more specifically the traffic noise produced by the surrounding city environment. The intention is to find a way to successfully obstruct the intense noise paths and reduce the impact of the city sound on the site in order to create an environment that is a meditative escape from the busy city. However, the approach to this cannot block the views of the reservoir that make the space welcoming and appealing to the site users. This was achieved by creating a series of berms placed strategically on the site in order to combat the noise. Along with the berm sound barriers, the buildings and vegetation also act as elements that contribute to the sound blockage.
